The Beaches of Cozumel, Mexico
If you are choosing Cozumel in Mexico as your destination, you are most probably in search of serenity. Unlike its party hopping neighbors, Cancun and Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel is more for relaxation. Activities such as scuba, snorkeling as well as fishing are popular choices. You can explore some Mayan ruins, visit Punta Sur Eco Beach Park or just enjoy one of the stunning beaches. This article focuses on Cozumel Beaches, Snorkel sites and also its natural beauty.
Cozumel Beaches Snorkel sites

Cozumel has some stunning beaches. If you are looking for beautiful white sand and would like to swim, head to the Western coast of the island. The Eastern side of the island is beautiful but offers primarily rocky beaches, cliffs, and rough waters with strong currents. Be aware that most of the beaches are accessed via a resort. So, if you want to rent a chair, umbrella or use the facility, you will have to purchase a day pass. One more important issue that tourists may have to deal with is the seaweed. Depending on the beach you select, and the time of year, sometimes sargassum (seaweed) can be a problem. Many of the high-end resorts do clean it up, but if you are looking for more secluded spots, ask around to find the best spots.
Cozumel’s nickname, the Island of Swallows, refers to its name “Cuzamil” which translates to Land of Swallows in the Mayan language. The Mayans considered Cozumel to be a sacred island. Goddess Ixchel brought beautiful swallows to further enhance its charm. Although you are likely to see swallows at most of the beaches, they are more abundant at beaches which offer vegetation as well as cliffs.
Western Coast of Cozumel

Enjoy the turquoise waters at Playa Palancar situated on Cozumel’s westside. The crystal clear water makes for great scuba diving as well as snorkeling. The Playa Palancar Beach Club offers all sorts of amenities with a day pass. They have very nice snorkeling there. The Money Bar has another easy snorkeling site right out front. It has a fun restaurant and bar, but it does tend to be super touristy, since it is five minutes from the cruise piers. Enjoy the serenity in the water, then go makes some new friends at the bar.
One more beach on Cozumel’s westside is Playa San Francisco. This beach is home to several beach clubs. You will be required to purchase a day pass to use the facilities at the San Francisco Beach Club as well as Paradise Beach Resort (see more info about the latter resort below under family beaches).
Eastern Coast of Cozumel
The beaches on the Eastern coast of Cozumel, tend to be less crowded since they are not always suitable for swimming. However, Playa Bonita is a gorgeous area, where swimming and snorkeling can be great. That said, always consider the conditions before entering the water. One more less frequented locale is Chen Rio Beach which is a stunning beach. It’s large rock formations create natural pools which make for fabulous photo opts.
Family Beaches

On the Western shore of Cozumel, the Paradise Beach Club offers a private beach and more. Be aware, this spot is geared to families. The water slides bring in lots of children. You don’t have to stay at the high-end resort to partake in all its activities. Paradise Beach Club sells day passes.
A one day pass option gives access to the beach and other activities, while the all-inclusive pass allows guests access to the club as well. Depending on the specific day pass you choose, it may include stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, snorkel gear, etc. https://www.paradisebeachcozumel.com
Playa Mia Grand Beach Park in Cozumel, Mexico is located in Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park and is a huge attraction for kids. This is a fantastic beach which offers additional activities such as zip lining with water parks nearby. And finally Playa Azul is another beach with calm water, perfect for kids. However, this is also a resort, so you will need to purchase a day pass.
Cozumel Adventure Seekers
The Punta Sur Eco Beach Park is a smaller area within the larger Punta Sur ecological park. It is a bit hard to get to over the bumpy road. However, if you are up for a nature adventure, Punta Sur Eco Beach Park may be an attractions for you. The entire Punta Sur area has many beaches. El Cielo is a noteworthy southern snorkel location in Cozumel. It is a sandbar off the coast, which can only be accessed via boat. Here you will find starfish on the ocean floor almost as if you are looking up to the heavens. Thus the name translates to heaven or sky.
On the Southern tip of Cozumel, within the general Punta Sur region, you will also find La Playa Las Hermosa as well as Playa Corona. Both can be good spots for snorkeling. The roads to some of these beaches are not easily traveled however. Yes there is wildlife to see on the way, but some destinations are not for the faint of heart.
There are lots of choices. Depending on your personal preferences, the team at EatTravelGo is sure you’ll find the best beach to suit your needs.
