Greece, The Parthenon

The Temple of Athena, also called the Parthenon is one of the most popular attractions in Greece. Under the leadership of Pericles, builders constructed the Parthenon in the Doric style between 447 and 438 BC.

The first time I visited this site, I was probably ten years old. I remember the impact that this historic site had on my life. My mother loved to travel, and explained that the acropolis was where people lived long ago…It was at this point in my young life that I knew I had to continue traveling to learn more about cultures which thrived long before the world I knew existed.

Parthenon Temple of Athena

The Parthenon, initially constructed as a temple for the Greek goddess Athena, underwent several transformations. It was repurposed as a church when it came under Christian control. Later, it was converted into a mosque after being seized by the Turks. In the late 1600s, the Acropolis, with its strategic elevated location, became a military stronghold during the conflict between the Venetians and Turks. Tragically, explosives stored within the Parthenon detonated, causing severe damage to its interior structures. Today, thousands of tourists annually visit this historic attraction, often left in awe of its spectacular grandeur.
