Review: Meow Wolf, Omega Mart, Las Vegas NV
If you have yet to Discover the Meow Wolf Universe, it is an artist run, incredibly imaginative venture that began in Santa Fe New Mexico. A collaborative mission, created by some of the most passionate artists on the planet, it has spread like wildfire. With several locations in various states, each installation features the work of local artists as well as the Meow Wolf international community. This article features my visit to Omega Mart in Las Vegas, which was marvelous. In addition you can read a review of my visit to Denver Colorado’s Meow Wolf. You can also read one of my other articles about several locations. Check below for links to all of the aforementioned articles.
Meow Wolf Omega Mart
So let us begin. I was scheduled for a tour with Michael Duffield, PR manager of the Las Vegas Meow Wolf location. Omega Mart is a superfluous over-the-top artist take on a grocery store. It is filled with hilarious innuendos and silly puns, complete with graphics and illustrations.
Some of my favorite groceries were Oh Those (Junk Drawer Cereal), Emergency Clams, Vegan Goat Pus, the noisy apples in the produce section and also the Daikon Pals. Pop open a can of gender fluid soda. Or, purchase a liter of corn soda. Many items are available to purchase. If you happen to be a big soup or sop fan, there’s a large selection of Camel’s Sop. Enjoy Implied Chicken, Dream of Mushroom, Barely Barley, or Homestyle Pigeon might be right up your alley.
You can also purchase a jug of Plausible Deniability. If you have questionable stains you can buy this special liquid soap to cleanse yourself. Another product that may help is the rainbow wash…just spray it all over. Don’t miss the meat counter. Enjoy a Birth of Venus party platter. Try some non-traditional ham. Or, delight in prepared foods such as tattooed chicken or a salad of politics.
Like much of the Meow Wolf universe, one can take everything at face value or engage in the underlying narrative. If you choose to go down the narrative journey, you may just fall through a wormhole of delight. Get ready for a deep dive kids.
DramCorp
Walter Dram of Dramcorp is the evil corporate boss using the Omega Mart conglomerate to overthrows small businesses, sucks them up and spits them out. His granddaughter, Marin Dram is defiant. Although she is reported missing, she is obviously working with the resistance. If you are pursuing the narrative, visit her house and also the home of the resistance. The intricacies of the narrative can be uncovered by exploring the various installations. Videos displayed throughout to space, actual computer files that you can peer into, as well as the tunnels from one section to the next are simply mind blowing. Again, one does not have to follow the narrative to enjoy a magical experience at any Meow Wolf location. The reality path is itself a feast for your senses.
We were guided into the cave room where a kaleidoscope video danced on the walls. Michael told us some of the hieroglyphs and symbols used in parts of the film are actually a new language. This is another deep dive reference for those traveling down the narrative path. Meow Wolf enthusiasts actually learn the language, as they seek to understand the deeper story. I especially liked an installation created by Gail Gilbert. It lived inside a stand alone freezer. A rotating character named Rhampa caught my eye. Did he just wink at me?
Hidden Portals & The Speakeasy
The hidden portals are so imaginative, and they are everywhere. In addition to the obvious ones, in the Omega Cola Fridge, inside the tent, behind the meat counter as well as in the T-shirt display, the lockers in the employee break room took me on a whole new journey. This led me to the Dramcorp Offices. Here you can poke through Herman Resources’ files.
If all the shopping and camouflaged entry ways into new worlds are just too overwhelming, head to Datamosh for a cocktail. It is located on the first floor. Just look for the sperm whale hearts on the wall. We did, and we indulged in some delicious cocktails.
If you are a creative, or just love art, you will adore Omega Mart. There is so much to see and explore. Make sure to save enough time to satiate your senses. Omega Mart is located in Area 15, 3215 S Rancho Dr #100, Las Vegas, NV 89102; https://www.omegamart.com
