Winter in Lake Tahoe, Skiing and Snowboarding
The mountains surrounding Lake Tahoe are world class destinations for skiing and snowboarding. With over five hundred inches of snow dropping annually, it’s no wonder that Tahoe is a popular winter vacation spot. There are more ski resorts in Tahoe within a 100-mile radius than any other state in the U.S.
Lake Tahoe Skiing Snowboarding
Heavenly Mountain Resort offers stunning lake views and diverse terrain. Palisades Tahoe, which hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics, provides extensive slopes, extreme cliffs and the famous KT-22 chairlift. It is very close to Alpine Meadows, another excellent resort. The two are now connected by a base-to-base gondola, offering endless runs for all levels. Northstar California Resort has limited expert terrain but is family-friendly with luxury amenities. All promise excellent skiing and snowboarding due to the substantial amount of snow that falls most years on the mountains near Lake Tahoe.
A less well-known but excellent option is Sugar Bowl. It offers a fantastic variety of both on piste and off piste terrain along with historic charm. It started running its lifts in 1939 and actually had the first chair lift in California. Being one of the closest resorts to Donner pass, Sugar Bowl is most easily accessible from the West. Locals and those in the know love Sugar Bowl for its deep snow, short lift lines and relatively uncrowded slopes. It also has some of the best views of all the mountains. If you are coming from the West side through Sacramento, stop here first. That way you can avoid the road congestion that often occurs during big snow storms on the way to the other Tahoe resorts. You may just decide to stay there for a week.
