Favorite Artists at Well Known Chelsea NYC Galleries
Chelsea is one of my favorite neighborhoods. It has grown tremendously, since I moved from NYC in 1999. The area has long been known as an artist enclave, but it is now jam packed with galleries. While I was visiting New York, some of my favorite artists happened to be exhibiting in Chelsea. So, I indulged in a day of art viewing. Favorite Artists Exhibiting in Chelsea NYC
You most probably have heard of Gagosian, as it is one of the largest and most well-known mega galleries in the world. Its seventeen international locations can be found all over the globe. That was my first stop. I actually visited two of its locations.
Jamian Juliano-Villano
I love the work of Jamian Juliano-Villano whose debut show titled IT opened on March 16, 2024. So I stopped by the 541 West 24th Gagosian location to view her solo exhibition. She is a rising star in the art world. Her work is in the public collection of The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, as well as the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Juliano-Villano’s work centers around consumer culture and social taboo. She chooses to make fun of stereotypes. Her media includes acrylic, airbrush and also oil painting. In addition to utilizing appropriation of iconic artists, she also incorporates her own writing into her artwork. Gagosian, 541 West 24th NYC, 10011; https://gagosian.com
The artist opened a gallery called O’Flaherty’s with two friends, Billy Grant and Ruby Zarsky. It is located in the East Village, a perfect setting for the funky storefront. https://www.oflahertysnyc.com
Richard Prince
Another exquisite exhibition that I enjoyed was on view at Gagosian’s 522 West 21st Street gallery. Richard Prince: Early Photography 1977-87.
The iconic artist is both a painter and a photographer. His job at Time-Life in the 70s inspired his interested in fashion and advertising. He was one of the first artists to utilize appropriation. Gagosian, 522 West 21st Street, NYC, 10011; https://gagosian.com
Pipilotti Rist
Hauser & Wirth partnered with Luhring Augustine to present Prickling Goosebumps & a Humming Horizon. During my NYC visit, the two-part exhibition, by Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist, was held simultaneously at two galleries. It includes both sculptural works as well as projections.
It is a wonderful exhibit. The artist has created a multi-sensory experience for viewers. A living room set-up was on view at Hauser & Wirth, while Rist created a shared backyard at Luhring Augustine. Visit ETG’s Instagram to view video from this show. Steve McCurry
After a long day of enjoying art, I was able to squeeze in one last stop. I enjoyed an exhibition by the legendary photojournalist Steve McCurry at Cavalier Gallery. Best known for his ground-breaking photograph of an Afghan Girl with piercing eyes, McCurry has traveled the world shooting the horrors of war. His portraiture work is truly iconic. He brilliantly captures the inner essence of each person. Cavalier Galleries, 530 W. 24th Street, NYC, 10011; https://www.cavaliergalleries.com
