Toto at the Hollywood Bowl: A Timeless Night of Music

It is hard to believe that the band Toto just played their debut show at the Hollywood Bowl. They have been a staple in the music industry for decades and enjoy over 30 million monthly listeners on Spotify – more than Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, or the Rolling Stones.

At their Bowl debut, Toto delivered a masterful performance, showcasing their enduring legacy as one of the greatest 80’s rock bands. We were all transported back in time, as soon as the band hit the stage. The nostalgia and excitement of the evening got a jump start however, when opener Christopher Cross played his first note of the night. He delivered a 45-minute hit-laden set, including “Sailing,” “Ride Like the Wind,” and “Arthur’s Theme”. Based on the crowd’s reaction, it was clear that a good portion of the audience was more than thrilled to see his performance.

After a brief intermission, Toto was on stage and ready to rock the house. The band is still led by founder, original guitarist, and co-lead vocalist, Steve Lukather. Vocalist Joe Williams, the son of noted composer John Williams, masterfully handled those critical vocal moments we all looked forward to. He was actually celebrating his birthday. Toto kicked off their 90-minute set with a couple of tracks off their first album “Girl Goodbye”. Soon enough, the hit classic “Hold the Line” brought the Bowl crowd to their feet.

Toto’s tight harmonies, complex arrangements, and impeccable musicianship were on full display. The energy was infectious, as the band seamlessly blended their classic sound with newer material, demonstrating their continued evolution.

Guitar Solos

Steve Lukather’s guitar virtuosity was a highlight of the show. His solos were both technical and soulful, captivating the audience with his skill and passion. Fans of the guitarist were in for a special treat when Lukather strapped on a familiar white guitar. The axe was used to perform Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” as a tribute to the late great Jeff Beck. Lukather is one of a handful of guitarists who has been asked to play this guitar by Beck’s wife Sandra.

Lukather’s passion, intensity and skill were met by veteran keyboard player Greg Phillinganes and the rest of the band.  The core rhythm section of John Pierce on bass and Shannon Forrest on drums provided a solid foundation, while Warren Ham and Steve Maggiori helped drive the songs with their energy and precision.

Highlights of the night included the funky “Georgie Porgy,” “I’ll Supply the Love,” “99” and a special appearance by co-founder David Paich for the final three songs – “Home of the Brave”, “Rosanna” and “Africa”.  The final two songs were met with thunderous applause and impressive sing-alongs from the crowd.

The concert was more than just a trip down memory lane; it was a celebration of Toto’s enduring talent and their impact on popular music. Their ability to connect with the Bowl audience on a deep emotional level is a testament to their timeless appeal. What a great night under the stars for fans of Yacht Rock.
