Solvang CA: Danish Restaurants

Solvang is located in the Santa Ynez Valley. Just over two hours from Los Angeles, this quaint town offers some wonderful restaurants and of course great wine. Below are some of the noteworthy Danish and Danish inspired options in town. While we did not dine at all these restaurants, I did review the Solvang Restaurant (see below for link).

The Solvang Restaurant

If you are looking for authentic Danish cuisine, head to the Solvang Restaurant. Offering a large menu, with both Danish and American dishes, there is something for everyone. Arrive early, as it is quite popular. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Viking Burgers, Fried Chicken, Meatballs, Danish style open-faced sandwich plate, Creamed Herring with pumpernickel bread, etc. I did have the chance to review this restaurant. CLICK HERE to read the review. I enjoyed the Sausage Platter (a combination of four sausages served with red cabbage, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes) – Delish! See cover photo. Paula’s Pancakes

Let’s not forget about Paula’s Pancakes, which is one of the best places to enjoy an authentic Danish breakfast. They have a large variety of items on the menu. I did dine at this restaurant. I enjoyed the Danish pancakes with warm cinnamon spiced apples and whipped creme plus a side of Danish Medisterpølse sausage. My husband, who is not the most adventurous diner, ordered a nontraditional option – chicken fried steak with biscuits and eggs. Paula’s Pancake House, 1531 Mission Drive, Solvang, CA 93463;

 Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery

Next door to Paula’s, you can find a simpler meal (Danish Continental Breakfast) at Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery, just one of the many incredible bakeries in Solvang. CLICK HERE for a list of additional bakeries. Olsen’s specializes in a large variety of authentic, delicious Danish pastries, breads, cookies and cakes including Danish Custard Kringle, Almond Tarts, Butter Rings and the authentic RundsTykker Danish Continental Breakfast. Bit O’ Denmark

Another restaurant that came highly recommended is the Bit O’ Denmark, which I did not have time to review. Located in one of the oldest buildings in Solvang, the Danish restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.  CLICK HERE to read about the interesting history of the building.  It also offers both Danish and American cuisine, so if you are traveling with a fussy eater, try Bit O’ Denmark, 473 Alisal Road, Solvang, CA 93463;

The Copenhagen Sausage Garden

A more Americanized restaurant that may suit your family better is the Copenhagen Sausage Garden (CSG). It’s an outdoor beer & wine garden that specializes in Sausages and charcuterie plates. Pet friendly. Visit the website for more info. The Copenhagen Sausage Garden, 1660 Copenhagen Drive, Solvang, CA 93463;

Red Viking Restaurant

Finally the Red Viking Restaurant offers authentic Danish classics plus a full menu of American cuisine options. Classic Danish cuisine includes: Open-faced sandwiches on Danish pumpernickel, Danish Sausage with Red Cabbage, Danish Meatballs with Red Cabbage, Pickled Herring, and more.  Open for lunch and dinner, this cozy restaurant boasts a full bar along with the tempting Danish favorites and classic American treats.
