Best Place to Stay – A Review of Mammoth Mountain Inn

After receiving an email stating that Mammoth Mountain was extending their spring ski season by two weeks, I was thrilled. I thought for sure my opportunity to snowboard again this year had slipped away. Then immediately checked my calendar and saw an opening, so I called the mountain to gather some info. I was transferred to Tatihana at the Mammoth Mountain Inn, and she was extremely helpful. While she had not personally been on the mountain for several days, she was able to answer all my questions. Friends of hers and hotel guests said conditions were fun between about 8:30am and 11:30am. The top was open, and the runs were well maintained. After speaking with her, we decided that this would be the perfect time to do a Mammoth Mountain Inn Review.

In all my years of visiting Mammoth, I had never stayed at Mammoth Mountain Inn. I had taken shelter in one of their restaurant/bars called the Yodler during a winter storm however. So, I knew the hotel had the best location imaginable. After my conversation with Tatihana, I realized Mammoth Mountain Inn was the best place to stay in Mammoth for this trip. I wanted to combine a several days of snowboarding with some hiking and photography. Being so close to the lifts would save me tons of time.

Best Access to Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Mountain Inn is situated extremely close to the main lodge right across from the panoramic gondola. Not only can you easily walk to the gondola and several chair lifts, you also have an incredible view of the mountain. If you book the right room, you can actually monitor mountain conditions from your bed. This can be a huge advantage during winter when storms occasionally result in whiteout conditions. Parking is another huge advantage. While everyone else is losing time driving, searching for parking then walking from their cars to the mountain, you are kicking back drinking coffee.

My wife and I got quite lucky, because one of the best rooms was available for our stay. We had a clear view of the mountain and a wonderful corner patio. Mammoth Mountain Inn is quite possibly the best lodging value in Mammoth. That said, it is a “vintage” property. In 1957, Mammoth Mountain and was the first ski resort accommodation. While it has gone through an evolution over the years, it has surprisingly kept its casual rustic vibe. Maintaining the character and charm of the original property somehow prevailed over the redevelopment vision of some. Alternative plans would have undoubtedly made the property accessible exclusively for those with money to burn. So, for now you can still afford to stay at the best location in Mammoth.

Mammoth Mountain Inn Amenities

The bed in our room was exceptionally comfortable. The shower had good pressure and the water got nice and hot. The weather during our stay was extraordinary, so we did not test the ac or heat. There was a coffee maker, a decent size refrigerator, a large closet, a small sitting area and an outdoor patio. We took advantage of all these amenities. Overall the room was comfortable and accommodating.

The one thing that should be improved for sure however is the sliding door to the patio. It was extremely hard to open. While we were primarily there for the amazing location and great value, we were a bit surprised that the door had not been replaced. There was a bit of construction happening during our stay, so some maintenance was underway. They were preparing for the large influx of visitors that would be arriving soon.

Onsite Restaurants

Mammoth Mountain Inn has a wonderful common area with tons of warmth and character. There is a very nice restaurant upstairs called Mountainside Bar & Grill which features glorious views of Mammoth Mountain. Across from the main building where we stayed is the historic Yodler Restaurant & Bar.

More Onsite Extras

There is also a swimming pool and several jacuzzis, a gym, all located behind the building with the forest as a backdrop. If you are looking for the best place to stay in Mammoth with super easy access to the mountain, Mammoth Mountain Inn is a great option. If access to the mountain is not a priority, Mammoth Mountain Resorts has numerous other options. My wife, and ETG co-founder Kathy Leonardo reviewed both of these restaurants (reviews coming soon).
