Best Wildflower Superbloom in California
A California wild flower superbloom is something special to witness. There is nothing quite like vast expanses of hills and open land painted with Mother Nature’s multi-colored flowers. During the peak of a superbloom, it is truly breathtaking.
California Wildflower Superbloom
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Walker Canyon in Lake Elsinore and the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve are favorite spots. There are many other great locations however, so you don’t necessarily need to drive far. Start paying attention in late February. That way you will not miss the peak of the wild flower blooms. If there is another superbloom, you should definitely try to be at the right place at the right time. The Theodore Payne wild flower hotline at 818-768-1802 ext 7 offers one great way to stay informed.
Ever since the superbloom of 2017, the public’s expectations of what they will experience has gotten a bit out of control. Some of the photos from that bloom were taken over a handful of specific days. Some were taken by park rangers with daily access to catch the best moments when everything came together perfectly. That said, thousands of regular people did witness many perfect days first hand throughout the parks. They enjoyed one of the most beautiful wild flower blooms imaginable.
Carizzo Plain National Monument
A destination that got a bit overlooked by the media in 2017 was Carizzo Plain National Monument. Although not the most accessible, many people who knew the spot took popular photographs of that superbloom there. The Temblor range had nearly every color wildflower blooming all at the same time. Various shades of yellows and whites covered the entire desert floor down by Soda Lake. I was fortunate enough to hear about Carizzo just in time, and I ended up being there on a great day. Five days sooner would have been “the day”.
The wild flowers at Anza Borrego, Joshua Tree, Lake Elsinore, Carizzo Plain, Death Valley and many other areas all have the potential to be quite awe inspiring. Plan ahead. Reap the reward. For additional information on the superbloom, visit – https://theodorepayne.org
