Review: Casa Riviera, Zenstay Hotel
My husband and I enjoyed a last minute romantic tris in Santa Barbara. It all started when we were invited to see Brandi Carlile at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Next thing we knew, we had an entire excursion planned and were heading up the coast. We stayed at a brand new Zenstay Hotel called Casa Riviera. The hotel was added to the Zenstay portfolio in July 2025, and it is delightful. The property is yet another adaptive reuse project and design-forward hotel transformation which Zenstay is known for.

When I first walked in, I immediately felt relaxed. I was told there would be a great view, but seeing the expansive window and the Hills of Santa Barbara beyond still took me by surprise. I immediately felt uplifted and inspired. “Look at the light on that amazing tree” was my photographer husband’s first comment. As a writer for two of my own websites, I am constantly on a deadline and this room was just what I needed to unwind.
The space was bright and cheery with a galley kitchen that turned out to be perfect for our stay. Since we receive large meals when reviewing restaurants, we always need a refrigerator, and having a full-featured microwave is also a plus. Of course, I cannot forget to mention the premium Nespresso coffee machine and all those tasty pods. As big coffee drinkers, this was a meaningful and appreciated step up, compared to the more typical coffee maker. The small table and chairs also came in handy for quick meals and late night snacks.
Contemporary Accommodations
Our modern room had an open air feeling due to the high vaulted ceiling and abundant natural light. My husband loved the quality of light that filled the room from the overhead loft area above the kitchen. Needless to say, the sun lit up the room as it streamed through that glorious large window during the day.
The bed and pillows were so comfortable. I had several fantastic nights of sleep. It was pure bliss away from the deadlines of LA. I also appreciated the cleanliness and design of the bathroom. It was quite spacious with a nice large shower.
When we first arrived, I found myself admiring a painting across from the bed. However, I soon realized it was actually a flat panel television. It displayed various artworks when it was not in use. This was a very cool way to make the room feel more like a retreat than a typical hotel room. The air conditioning was nearly silent which was great.
Best Location in Santa Barbara
Most importantly, the location of Casa Riviera is just fabulous. It is accessible to everything. While close to State Street, we did not have to deal with any noise from the popular destination. We walked to both the Funk Zone and the harbor. Plus, it is reasonably close to the Santa Barbara Bowl which is why we were there. Due to our tight schedule, we took a Lyft to the venue but walked back to Casa Riviera after the show.
One essential point is that there is no check-in desk. All correspondence is done by emails and text. My husband was a bit concerned at first, but it was super easy. At first I corresponded with Director of Hospitality Dee Burton. Then, several other staff members took over via email and we exchanged texts after we arrived. They were all personable and quite helpful.
All in all, Casa Riviera is a terrific place to stay. Our Santa Barbara holiday was exceptional, and Casa Riviera turned out to be the perfect property for our needs.
