Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, Andy Scott grew up surrounded by industry and craftsmanship. His father worked as a draughtsman; his mother served as a care assistant. Scott studied sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art, where he earned honors and a postgraduate diploma by 1987.

Unlike most artists, he did not attempt to break into the local gallery scene. He decided to go into business as an architectural metalworker. In 1997 he was commission to build The Heavy Horse which changed the direction of his career.

Scott opened his first studio in Glasgow’s East End. He later worked near the Forth & Clyde Canal and also spent time sculpting in Queensland, Australia. In 2014, he unveiled The Kelpies in Falkirk—two 100-foot-tall horse heads that quickly became symbols of Scottish pride.

Scott now lives and works in Los Angeles. He constructs his pieces using thousands of steel segments, applying traditional drawing skills and modern fabrication methods. His sculptures stand between 10 and 100 feet tall. Horses, mythic beings, and human forms dominate his work.

Ironically, the artist did not grow up surrounded by horses, but later fell in love with the strong beautiful animals. So you could say his love for horses grew, after he started receiving commissions. Of course, horses are not the only type of sculpture the artist creates. He has produced several human works such as Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany, David Silva as well as an unnamed large statue of a woman in period dress reading a book. The latter resides in a suburban housing development located in the coastal town of Prestonpans. Scott has created all sorts of massive animal sculptures as well.

Over the past two decades, Scott has completed numerous public commissions across the globe. Cities, corporations, sports teams, and private clients have all acquired his striking monumental art.
