Review: Coronado Island Tour, Guaycura Adventures
After enjoying an incredible experience blue whale watching with Guaycura Adventures in Loreto Mexico, my husband and I decided to do a second tour. This time we chose to visit Coronado Island. Guaycura Adventures offers a plethora of excursions and tours, Snorkeling at Isla Danzante and Isla Carmen, grey whale watching, and sport fishing are popular with ocean enthusiasts. Moreover, land outings include city walking tour and guided hikes to see ancient cave painting.
Guaycura Adventures Coronado Island

For our Isla Coronado tour, we met again at the lighthouse just above the dock. Lezley (co-owner of Guaycura Adventures) led us to our boat for the day. Her husband/co-owner and captain, Argenis gave us our life jackets, and we selected our seating (Find out more about Guaycura Adventures-link below). I grabbed my favorite comfy seat next to our captain, while Rich started spreading out his camera gear in the front towards the bow. We waved goodbye to Lezley and enjoyed the variety of birds that are ever-present at the dock. Numerous pangas were heading out to sea on their various excursions. With a nice group of excited guests on board, Captain Argenis headed straight towards the back of Coronado Island. The volcanic rock was stunning. He explained that Isla Coronado is a dormant volcano. The sea was calm, and the weather was glorious.
Sea Lions & Birds

As our captain brought us closer to the island, we saw a colony of sea lions, which he preceded to wake up by clapping. This made for some fabulous photos. A few were swimming, while the majority just lounged on the rocks soaking up the sun. Captain Argenis told us a bit about the sea lions. I had no idea that the black ones were male, and the brown ones were female. Each time we stopped, he asked everyone on board. “Did you get your photos?” prior to leaving. As we continued on, Argenis pointed out several rock formations that looked like Snoopy and various other characters.
Blue Footed Boobies

Then we rounded a corner and began seeing an array of exotic birds – Brown Pelicans with colorful necks, a lone Osprey, Frigate birds, and most notably Blue-Footed Boobies. The Boobies were my favorite. They were so cute. I did not even know they lived here. This was already a day to remember, and we had not even reached the white sand beach for lunch.
Coronado Island

As we picked up speed and headed that way, a baby blue whale popped up. Then we saw a larger one closer to the island. We sat still for a while watching the whales. Then off to the beach we went. We arrived at one of Coronado Island’s few protected coves with a beach. The water there is a beautiful blue green color with perfect visibility. Captain Argenis hopped off with a bunch of gear and immediately set up a large square sun cover. He had comfortable beach chairs ready for each guest, as they returned from peeing behind the bushes (sorry no bathrooms here). By the time I sat in my chair, he had the cooler out with bag lunches ready. He handed out large beach towels and showed everyone the snorkeling gear. Not sure how he did it all so fast, without even asking for help.
Enjoying the Beach

A couple of the tour members headed out to explore the island, while I wanted to relax and eat right away. Beers, sodas and water were available. After a few moments, Captain Argenis came back from the boat with fresh guacamole and chips. He literally just made it while on board. It was delicious. Between that, the burritos, a bag of chips, a granola bar and the drinks, I was a happy camper. I sat in the shade, enjoying the view and watching the birds floating on the water. My husband took off with his camera, while some or the guests headed straight into the water.

After eating, my husband and I decided to go snorkeling for a bit. The water was pretty cold, so we warmed back up with a short quick walk on the island. I could not get over the gorgeous color of the water. So right before we left, I hopped in for another swim.
This is a wonderful tour and a great compliment to the Blue Whale tour. I highly recommend you enjoy an excursion with Guaycura Adventures. After loving two outings, I can only expect that the other tours are fantastic as well. Don’t hesitate to ask Lezley for a custom tour, if there is something special you want to do. My husband came home wishing he had known about the Blue Footed Boobies. Had he done more research, he would have requested extra time to photograph these birds. https://www.guaycura-adventures.com/
