Tate Modern in London

Tate Modern in London is one of its most popular attractions…it is also one of the largest contemporary museums in the world. The museum transformed the expansive structure from an industrial power station adding character and creating a work of art unto itself. Part of a network of four museums run by the TATE organization, it opened in 1988, and is Britain’s national gallery for modern art.

The first of the four museums to open was the Tate Britain, the National Gallery of British Art when it was founded in 1897. It was originally named the TATE Gallery prior to 1932. Additional venues include the Tate Liverpool (in north west England) and Tate St Ives (1993) in Cornwall.

Tate Britain features predominantly historic British art, as well as contemporary work. Artists include: Tracey Emin, Douglas Gordon, John Latham, etc. While the Tate Modern features art from 1900 to the present. Tate Liverpool has celebrates artists such as Candice Breitz, Theaster Gates, and Don McCullin. Tate St Ives features work by modern British artists – many from the St Ives School. In 1980, the TATE took over management the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden in St Ives.
