Brockton Villa Restaurant, A San Diego Historic Landmark
My husband and I were on a weekend getaway from LA to San Diego. We stopped in La Jolla just as the sun was starting to set. As a professional photographer, when Richard is after a shot, he often darts off and we meet up later. So, when I spotted the Brockton Villa Restaurant, I told him to go on ahead and take his time. I wanted to relax there, grab a cocktail and enjoy the sunset without rushing him. So, he headed towards the water with his camera, while I went up to the restaurant.

It turned out that Brockton Villa is a San Diego Historical Landmark restaurant known in part for its amazing ocean and sunset views.
Brockton Villa La Jolla History
Built in 1894 by Dr. Joseph Rhodes, and perched just above La Jolla Cove, it was initially one of the original beach cottages in the area. It was later converted to a restaurant. The property was purchased for $165….what a deal!

After the death of Dr. Rhodes in 1896 two sisters, Olivia Mudgett and Nellie Mills, took over the house. They rented out the beach bungalow and named it The Brockton Villa. Many years later, in the 1940’s, Moreland MacPike became a tenant. The Turtle Lady, as she was called, had a piano-playing turtle that was said to have entertained President Truman once at the White House. As the years rolled on, the cottage fell into disrepair. Eventually, in the early 1990’s, the Pannikin family, of Pannikin Coffee and Tea, took possession. They renovated the building and adapted it for use as a restaurant. In 1993, Pannikin received the orchid award for preservation due to its distinctive renovation of the Brockton Villa cottage. It still remains in the Pannikin family to this day.

Brockton Villa La Jolla Now
The restaurant is charming with long tables facing the water, offering patrons a lovely view of La Jolla Cove. Set in a whimsical house, it also has some comfy seating inside. I grabbed a prime spot on the balcony overlooking the ocean, ordered a margarita and was happy as a clam. After a few sips, I decided to order an appetizer. This was a perfect companion. It included silky Buratta drizzled with balsamic vinegar, some zesty prosciutto, olives, a nice salad as well as a hunk of crusty bread.

My husband finally caught up with me, and we enjoyed a romantic moment together at the Brockton Villa. It is a charming spot, so if you are in the area, stop in for a drink or have a meal.
