I met Alex when I stayed at the Acoma House in Denver Co. Alex worked with the hotel’s owners Christina and Michael Eisenstein and co-curated the art in the suites. Additionally, in collaboration with Christina, she brought in artists who would in then create their own murals in each suite. Alex painted her own room, as well as much of the exterior mural of the Acoma House.

Babe Walls

Alex met Christina and Michael in 2019 at the beginning of construction for the Acoma House. It was then that Alex told Christina about her dream to create Babe Walls a non-profit that supports and celebrates women and non-binary artists worldwide. Christina & Michael supported her vision (both emotionally and financially), and helped to create a successful Babe Walls Festival. Additional founding artists include: GrowLove, Gina Ilczyszyn, Romelle, and Kaitlin Ziesmer. Kaitlin created the murals in the suite that I stayed in at the Acoma House. History

Q: When did you start painting?
A: I started painting murals in Denver in 2018; but I’ve been painting since I was a child. My first outdoor mural was in 2016 in Columbus, OH.

Q: Have you worked with Christina before Babe Walls?
A: Our first meeting was about the Acoma House – but we really worked the most together to pull off the first Babe Walls festival in Westminster at a number of her properties up there.

Q: What was your first collaboration with Christina like?
A: Meeting her at the Acoma House first to talk about curating that project; and then in that meeting I explained to her my vision for wanting to put together an all-women’s mural festival. From there she mentioned how she had some buildings together and was able to connect me with the other building owner in that same area so we could create more of a festival atmosphere. Christina has always been a huge supporter of artists and we could not have gotten Babe Walls off the ground without her initial involvement. I’m super thankful to her and Mike!

Alexandrea Pangburn Curating the Acoma House Rooms

Q: Can you explain the curation part of your collaboration at the Acoma House?
A: The Acoma House is a 26 artist collaboration. Myself and another Denver artist, Joon, curated the building so that each room was painted by a different artist. It was important to fill the building with local artists and artists that represented different styles and voices.

Q: Did you suggest most of the artists?
A: It was a collaborative effort choosing the artists. Myself, Joon, and Christina all had say in who was chosen. Each artist is local, and I had worked with or knew of each one. So we knew who was being brought into the space and creation of the Acoma House.

Painting a Room at the Acoma House

Q: Can you tell me a bit about your room at the Acoma, as well as how long it took?
A: My suite took 3 weeks to complete. It’s called “The Four Corners”; a room that highlights local fauna from the four corners (Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona). The Jack Rabbit is an Arizona species, The Road Runner is a New Mexico species, the Elk is a Colorado species, and the Desert Fox is an Utah species. You’ll see 4 blue dots on each of the walls with each animal, representing the four corners and the color of the sky to show they are all connected.

Q: In addition to painting, did you also contribute to any of the other designs after you finished painting?
A: As an artist that painted a room, my only involvement past the initial curation was that I did have some say in the fixtures that were placed in the suite that I did. Christina was really great about collaborating with each artist to find fixtures, tiles, and nic knacks that all made sense and complimented the space.

Coming Up

Q: What’s coming up next for you?
A: My next installation is one on the east side of Denver at a new low-income housing development.

Finally, Alex said “I’m always thankful for the support that the Denver art community has given me. I’m forever grateful that people keep wanting to support my art!” Find out more about this talented artist on her website – https://www.alexandreapangburn.com/
