Space Needle Seattle Attraction and Pike Place Market

Seattle is an amazing city. Here are a couple of must-see attractions. The Space Needle is an iconic Seattle landmark. It was originally built for the 1962 World’s Fair, and its futuristic design was inspired by the fair’s Space Age theme. It is without a doubt one of the most popular Seattle attractions. Standing 605 feet tall, the towering structure offers unrivaled 360-degree views of Seattle, Mount Rainier and Puget Sound, as well as the Cascades and the Olympic mountain ranges. It is part of the Seattle Center, an active civic, arts and entertainment campus.

Space Needle Seattle Attraction

Owned and managed by the Wright family, descendents of Howard S. Wright II who constructed it, the Space Needle continues to be a symbol of innovation, originality and imagination. When the opportunity to reinvigorate Seattle Center arose, the Wright family took interest. In the spirit of progress, they invited Northwest glass artist Dale Chihuly to present a comprehensive collection of his work. Having always loved the Space Needle, Chihuly was delighted with the opportunity to design an Exhibition Hall, a Garden installation and a Glasshouse in his own community. Through its community partners, Chihuly Garden and Glass supports opportunities for education and involvement in the arts. Space Needle Upgrades

In 2018, a major transformation of the Space Needle was completed, dramatically enhancing the visitor experience. The renovation created breathtaking new views from the upper level outdoor observation deck which features floor-to-ceiling open-air glass walls and skyriser glass benches. Take the Oculus stairs down from the observation deck to enjoy a unique new perspective. The world’s first rotating glass floor, called The Loupe, provides a downward view of the building’s internal structure.

ETG TIP: Have a drink at the Loupe Lounge Bar. Wait for a table. They open up pretty quickly. I did NOT realize how much I needed to sit after a long day of walking – so do it. Enjoy the rotating view along with a cocktail. While you are there, ask for Dennis the bartender. He has worked at the Space Needle for over 41 years and has seen the improvements first hand. Dennis will tell you all about the history of the building and share some really fun stories too. He can even make you a smoking martini.

Pike Place Market

Another attraction you should NOT skip while visiting Seattle WA is Pike Place Market as the locals call it (not Pike’s Place). It has been a cultural gem in Seattle for 116 years (as of August 2023). Pike Place is much more than a farmer’s market or food court. It is a destination.

Pike Place Market History

The iconic market officially opened on August 17, 1907. The “Meet the Producer” ethos, proudly displayed at the market’s entrance, originated from early rules requiring vendors to be the creators of their wares. This principle lives on today with locally sourced handmade goods gracing the craft and farm tables, often manned by the growers or makers themselves. This market boasts numerous firsts, including Seattle’s first coffee bar in 1908 and Three Girls Bakery, the city’s first female-licensed business. The bakery still thrives here since its 1912 inception.

ETG Tip: Keep an eye out for fish throwing, a popular activity. You’ll see a crowd forming at Pike Place Fish Co., as well as other fish markets. People wait for someone to purchase fish.
