Germany: Düsseldorf, The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen

A top Germany Art Museum, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is located in Düsseldorf. It is a state museum featuring an illustrious art collection (ranging from classical to Modernism/Contemporary). The museum has three venues the K20 at Grabbeplatz, the K21 in the Ständehaus, as well as the Schmela Haus.

Kunstsammlung was founded in 1961 by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, then in 2002, an additional venue, Ständehaus (K21) was added. The Schmela Haus opened in 2009 as a lecture space in the historic section of Düsseldorf.

There is a free shuttle between the two museums K20 and K21, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen. The bus departs approximately every 30 min. during opening hours and is for 8 passengers at max. Bus stops in front of each museum entrance.

The Kunstsammlung was first launched with the purchase of 88 works by Paul Klee from the collection of Pittsburgh steel manufacturer G. David Thompson. The collection grew to include works by iconic artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky etc., along with American artists…Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns,  Andy Warhol, etc.
