New York City: Cheap Eats

If you know New York City, you know cheap eats are a rarity. However, if you want to find the best NYC food deals, you just have to know where to look. I was born in New York City (this is Kathy talking – btw), and every time, I head back to the city, I go straight to classic NY grub.

My first stop is Papaya King. I absolutely love the hot dogs here. You gotta get all the fixins – mustard, onions and sauerkraut, relish too – if you can handle it. Papaya King was founded in 1932, and has locations all over the city. Check for the one nearest you – https://www.papayaking.com/

If you love pizza, New York is THE place to be. Head to John’s of Bleecker Street for its famous coal fired pizza. This historic pizza place opened in 1929 at its original location on Sullivan Street. Currently on Bleeker Street, just look for the line that forms in the afternoon and you’ll know you have arrived. Mamoun’s Falafel has been around since 1971. It was my go-to falafel place in the village when I was in high school. The food was great, the prices were even better and they were open late. It claims to be the oldest falafel restaurant in New York and one of the earliest Middle Eastern establishments in the United States. The family-owned eatery has expanded over the years, adding more locations and now offers franchises. For a full list of locations, visit the website – https://www.mamouns.com

Uptown Foodie Deals

If you are uptown…check another local place in Harlem called Sea & Sea Fish Market. It offers large portions in addition to great prices. This carry-out only market, located 116th and Lenox has incredible deals. The fish is fresh and the portions are gigantic. Fried clams is my go-to order. You can also order one portion of flounder and split it amongst 3 friends or 2 big eaters. Or order the scallops, shrimp, fish and fries dish for even more food.

Order up and stroll to 110th (the top of Central Park) and eat your lunch by the lake. It’s so beautiful. Sea & Sea Fish Market, NYC 62 W 116th St (at Lenox Ave), New York, NY 10026; No website…locals only!
