When you are in Solvang, you owe it to yourself to indulge. Danish bakeries are everywhere, so throw out all thoughts of a diet, and act like a kid. Get whatever you want. I had a chance to try most of these bakeries, and they are truly incredible. So, if you are planning a trip to Solvang, be sure to add these to your itinerary.

Arvid Petersen, the founder of Danish Mill Bakery Inc. finished his apprenticeship as a baker in 1931. Upon receiving his degree as a journeyman baker, he went to work for one of the finest bakeries in Copenhagen, Denmark. While working there he supplied the baked goods for King Christian X. In 1940 the Petersens started the Danish Mill Bakery in Copenhagen, Denmark.The family immigrated to the United States in 1957. On September 17th, 1960, the Danish Mill Bakery was opened in Solvang, and continues to be a popular bakery. The Solvang Bakery is a charming family owned boutique bakery, which also sells all types of eclectic gifts, ornaments, and housewares. Well known for its wedding cakes, and gingerbread houses, the recipes developed by founder, Susan Halme, and has been a source of holiday joy for over 30 years. The creative team takes gingerbread to the next level, making everything from a quaint Christmas Cottage to a giant Gingerbread Estate complete with lights and fireplace. Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery is located right next to Paula’s Pancake House, Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery is owned and operated by Bent and Susy Olsen. Bent, a third generation master baker, brought his great-grandfather’s original Danish recipes with him from faraway Aerøskøbing, Denmark in 1970. Today, he still uses those original, cherished, family recipes. Mortensen’s Bakery is located in the Petersen Village Square. This quaint cafe was originally started with partner Ove Mortensen, a Danish native and baker from Copenhagen, Denmark. The Petersen sisters continue to carry on Ove’s legacy creating authentic, buttery-rich pastries using traditional recipes and the finest ingredients.
